Great saddle by Anonymous, 20 November 2011, 9 out of 12 people found this review helpful I bought this Brooks saddle for a coast to coast ride. It was very comfortable from the off, better than any previous saddle I’ve owned and has just got better and better as it bedded in. I have now covered over 1000 miles on it and it had visably moulded to my shape and is fantastically comfy. There are negatives however. 1. Its heavy, twice as heavy as the Titanium railed Selle Italia saddle it replaced. 2. You need to cover it up in rain as the leather will be damaged by the damp, although mine has withstood a little rain with no obvious ill effects. You should buy the Brooks cover for another fiver just incase you get caught out. 3. It requires a little maintenance every now and again i.e. reproofing and re tensioning, both easy to do. A spanner was supplied with mine for tensioning which needed doing after the bedding in period. In summary buy if you want a saddle for life, the extra 200 grams is well worth the reward. B17 works well by Anonymous, 5 July 2012, 6 out of 7 people found this review helpful I’ve done (8) 30 min spins on the trainer and (3) 50km rides, and this B17 Imperial saddle has been comfortable from the get go. At 525gm, it’s about 40gm heavier than the Selle Italia Gelflo Sport Tourer I’d used for 2 years. I did a 120km ride on my road bike 4/’12 (Autumn in Australia), and copped a sore bum which persisted on the next 2 rides of about 80km. Assos chamois creme helped, but alleviating the source appealed. My B17 Imperial feels like a quality saddle, and is meant to ride cooler than the gel saddles. The perineal slot would help circulate air. Gel/foam apparently compresses with use to let the sit bones get sore, can push up where pressure isn’t needed, and probably retained heat in warm conditions. The Brooks approach is to let your bum mould the saddle’s shape, so it improves with time. The first Imperial was so surprisingly decent to ride, I’ve just received another two for other touring bikes I’ve got. The perineal slot apparently allows the leather to flex easier, enhancing its cushioning. My last 2 are honey coloured (darkens to brown with Proofide), which wasn’t available in Melbourne. My first black one looks the business, and selecting honey took a leap of faith. If you ride more than 10km, this is a very worthwhile improvement. Many touring bikes in 2 clubs I’m in (MBTC and Audax) have Brooks saddles, and B17 is specifically a touring saddle. No copper rivets with Imperials, and B17S is the female version. My Ortlieb large saddle bag adapted to the B17’s rails OK (clamps underneath saddle), no big deal. A quality product made in England. I found this review helpful I did not find this review helpful
