But you’ve got to worry about keeping your valuable phone securely attached to your handlebars and waterproof. You may also find the big screen and all the information on it more distracting than helpful. You could plot a route in Google Maps and use its voice navigation and a pair of headphones to guide you turn-by-turn. But you won’t be able to hear traffic noise as well. Enter Beeline. Beeline consists of an app on your phone and a simple, durable, beautifully designed compass unit paired via Bluetooth and that you attach to your handlebars. The app means you have the power of Google Maps, and plenty of fantastic navigation options to help you plot a route. The compass means your phone can sit safely in your pocket or pannier while it provides the navigational smarts, leaving the display of the information you need to the compass. The main info is an arrow that points in the direction of your destination or next waypoint, but you can also toggle through a few other things too, like speed. That simplicity of the compass’ display is one of Beeline’s key attractions for me, in contrast to the cluttered screens of its rivals. Still, if you want more info on your rides, you can quickly upload them to Strava. Perhaps the best thing about Beeline though is that they’re a young British startup who respond to user feedback and requests for improvements. Originally Beeline was simply an arrow that pointed at your destination, allowing you to find your own way there. But users asked for the addition of waypoints, provided by the user or automatically provided by Beeline, and now they’re part of the app. They’re constantly improving things in other ways too. My own Beeline experience didn’t have the smoothest of starts, but one refresh of the app later and I take it everywhere. So much so that if my Beeline broke, I would instantly order another one. Highly recommended.
