Amazingly effective at sealing small-medium size punctures by Joshg, 20 December 2016, 5 out of 5 people found this review helpful After getting punctures every 1-2 months from commuting in the city, I decided to try Joe’s Yellow Gel. The tyres I was using were Kenda 42-622 hybrid bike tyres with no puncture resistant layer, although the tread was rather thick. After buying the yellow gel I realised I need inner tubes with removable valve cores, to put the gel in the tubes. Schwalbe and Continental Presta Valve tubes almost always have removable cores, but check first. A special key is also required to remove the core, which my LBS gave me for free along with the purchase of the gel. A spoke wrench with an 11 gauge slot works perfectly too if you have one lying around. After filling half the bottle into each tube with the valve stem at the 8’oclock position I screwed the valve cores back in. I should have cleaned the inside of the tube stem first, as there was some gel in it, which affected the performance of the valve, so I recommend using a small allen key with a cloth wrapped around to clean the inside of the stem. After administering the yellow gel to my tubes I immediately noticed how I would no longer find my bike with flat tyres in the morning. What I did notice however was the occasional drop in tyre pressure. What I soon realised was that this was due to a puncture causing the loss of approx. 20 psi or so (from 80) while the yellow gel sealed it up. Much better than it going completely flat. A quick use of the pump and it’s back to normal. Sometimes you will hear the hissing noise of air escaping when you have a puncture, sometimes you won’t. If you do, I recommend stopping immediately and spinning the tyre for a couple of minutes to help the gel flow to the outside of the tube and seal the hole up. One problem I do have is that it can cause the valves to seize. This happens when you let air out of the tyres by pressing valve down (on presta valves). To prevent this I recommend leaving the wheels with the valve in the 12 o’clock position for 5 minutes to let the gel flow to the bottom and prevent it coming out when letting air out. Yes it adds 300 or so grams to your bike, but I think the reduced effect of punctures is definitely worth it. Yes you could instead buy tyres with puncture protection, but if you DO happen to get a puncture (it happens) you will have to repair/replace the tube. Yellow gel allows you to usually finish your ride without too much hassle, except for the loss of a few psi. If you’re looking for ultimate puncture protection peace of mind, the combination of a puncture resistance tyre and Joe’s Yellow gel is pretty much bulletproof. Pros: effective good value universal easy to apply Cons: can cause the valve to seize may need replacing/topping up after may punctures I found this review helpful I did not find this review helpful
