Dura Ace R9100 v Ultegra 6800 by CyclistAnon, 18 November 2017, 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful Unashamedly I recently replaced most of my drivechain with Dura Ace mainly for the bling factor. Nonetheless, whereas in operation there is little noticeable difference between the R9100 and 6800 rear mechs, I do find the R9100 front mech easier to trim and easier to change chainring, more so than I had expected. (Bear in mind I am still using the non-series shifters which preceded the Ultegra-designated ones.) Some cyclists with tighter frames than mine will find the loss of the long arm will permit them to run a wider tyre. Also, some will like the new on-board cable tensioner. What I dislike about the FD is the route the cable takes through it and the incorporation of the plastic link cover, which could quite easily be mislaid when changing cables. Additionally, if you are not careful, as the cable loops back, it could quite easily snag the mechanism, not allowing the chain guide its full range of movement when over the small chainring. Of the three R9100 components I have (rear mech, crankset and this front mech), the FD is the one where you will observe a difference over the 9000 and the 6800. I doubt that you will be able to tell the R9100 apart from the new Ultegra R8000 in function though.
