Bye bye front derailleur! by RichCheap, 23 January 2017, 10 out of 10 people found this review helpful Excellent value for money for a complete gearset. I replaced an old 3×9 deore setup and every component is lighter and of course the front derailleur is missing which saves further weight. All I am missing is the one granny gear and two gears at the fast end compared to the 3×9 ratios. I never really used those gears anyway. Performance has been brilliant, it hasn’t missed a beat even with all the mud lately. Will happily back pedal in all gears, even the 42 tooth one. Not had a clutch mech before, what an improvement. No more chain slap at all and it hasn’t dropped the chain once. I don’t think it is mentioned on the product page but the gear shifter comes with a blanking plate for the indicator window so you can remove it if you want. A good decision so far. by Gavinski, 26 August 2017, 7 out of 7 people found this review helpful My LBS told me I needed to replace my drive train (2×10 Sram) as it was worn out. I had seen 1×11 on my friends bikes on a recent trip and from their comments about how simple the system was I made a decision to upgrade. No way I can afford 1×12 and the price of SLX was really good. Bought from CR and fitted by a local mechanic in what I was told was a fairly simple procedure, I think some tinkering with a shim for the BB30 was needed. I have ridden it a few times now and all my concerns about lack of gear at top and bottom end are generally unfounded. Yes it lacks a big gear to go fast on a really flat smooth or downhill road but its a mountain bike! Off road no issues and can get up all the trails I did before with no problem and the simplicity of just having one lever to worry about is great. I am really enjoying the riding at the moment. I am sure I push bigger gears than I would normally but that is a good thing and I can feel myself getting fitter, maybe dinner plate gears make you lazy! We like to faff as MTBers I am already thinking should I get a 30T as well as the 32T I had fitted. The only reason for this would be for a couple of things I have done in the past. A 24hour event I do has a good old smooth fireroad climb and after a few laps I go up the gears and end up spinning in an easy one. I am sure with the 32t I would run out of steam quite soon. Similar on rides in the UK, we did a ride up Hellvellyn and I know I would miss the easy spinning gears on the really steep stuff. However these 2 occasions don’t make it a bad choice, I just think that when required you could put on a smaller front ring (think there is only a 30t option) and its dead simple to do. All in all it seems to be the future. Pros: simple Cons: at times you may want easier gears I found this review helpful I did not find this review helpful
