1600 km and counting by PhysicsMike, 16 October 2017, 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful I used these spokes to build up a new rear wheel for the rather-unusual setup on my commuter bike (8 speed with 700C wheel). The build went well and there was no difficulty with any rough or imprecise threads. I have over 1600 km on the new wheel over rough roads, bumps, and bunny hops. The wheel has stayed true and is certainly lighter and more responsive than the one it replaced. If you are considering these “extreme” double-butted spokes versus straight spokes you should know that these spokes should provide a more durable wheel than straight spokes (and one that does a better job of staying true when going over bumps and hitting potholes). This might seem counter-intuitive, but a double-butted spoke can absorb more energy from an impact than a straight spoke; the double-butted spokes also do a better job of spreading the load around the rim. The reason for this is that the tension on the spokes will be the same, but the spokes will stretch more under a shock load, allowing the nearby spokes to start helping to carry the load, which spreads the load around more of the rim. Meanwhile, they don’t feel any less stiff than straight spokes because the wheel stiffness is more a function of the rim than the spokes. It’s the strength of the rim (and not the spokes) that limits the allowable spoke tension, and that tension is a big part of what keeps a wheel stiff.
