Shimano SLX 10spd rear derailleur by PEJLS, 7 April 2017, 3 out of 3 people found this review helpful A fallen branch from a Eucalyptus tree went straight between the inner and outer cage of my SLX derailleur and snapped the inside cage in half. Cheaper to buy a whole new derailleur than replace the damaged cages. But the moral of the story is that the clutch was engaged when the derailleur was speared by the stick so there was not sufficient give in the system to prevent the catastrophic failure that ensued. So consider sliding the clutch to the off position when riding through plantations and forests with menacing fallen branches lying across the trail. A bit of irritating chain slap noise is a fair trade for preserving the rear derailleur! Otherwise there is not much more that can be said that hasn’t been said already about Shimano’s drive train kits. The SLX range of kit is value for money, generally bullet proof (if not Eucalyptus stick proof) and does the job almost as well as the XT and XTR range of kit at a slight weight disadvantage but leaving some more moolah in your pocket to pay for the after ride pub lunches/dinners. Highly recommended for cost effective, trouble free xc, trail and enduro. Happy trails! Pros: cost effective and trouble free Cons: slightly heavier than xt and xtr counterparts. Replaced a previous gen SLX, works great by CherryC, 13 October 2017, 1 out of 1 people found this review helpful Shifts are clean and smooth for the price. Finish/looks of the derailleur are also very nice, much nicer than the previous generation. My unit’s clutch came a bit overly tight and required adjustment to improve shifting to larger cogs, but the adjustment is easy.
