Nice stiff soled MTB shoes — Mind the size! by Cachalot, 25 July 2017, 33 out of 33 people found this review helpful The synthetic uppers of these shoes are shiny almost to the lustre of patent leather. You’ll be putting on the Ritz in black tie SPD shoes. They’re good looking and thanks to the new Boa lacing and lack of mesh panels the styling is simple and uncluttered. This version departs from previous iterations of high-end carbon soled Shimano MTB shoes I’ve owned in having a much reduced area of mesh ventilation panels. There is only one small mesh area above the toes; otherwise ventilation is via a grid of 1mm perforations in the synthetic upper on the lateral and medial aspects of the shoe. So I suppose these might not breathe as well as those superseded and extinct styles I knew. Boa lacing is easy to use but I couldn’t tighten the system up as firmly as with the clutches I’ve been used to for a while. Those clutches had a limited lifespan and by the time they broke replacements were not necessarily easy to source. Boa offer a lifetime guarantee; we’ll see how that goes and what precisely they mean by lifetime. Biggest surprise was the sizing. This is the fourth pair of Shimano MTB shoes I’ve bought. All the others were good fits for me in EU size 45 with plenty of room in the toe box to wriggle the digits. Not these. The toe box has a much lower profile and my toes bumped into the end of the shoe when the toe end of the shoe was stubbed into the floor. Back they go to be swapped for EU 46. When walking, while the sole is stiff, it provides more flexion for the toes than the shoes these will replace, Shimano M240 which are noticeably stiffer in this department despite the great amount of use they have endured. Removing the insoles revealed a diamond-grid lattice in the moulding of the carcase of the sole. Each diamond is about 8mm long, 4mm wide, and 3mm deep. Must be designed like this to keep weight down and simplify manufacturing. Wrapping of the upper into the sole is not visible. The lattice of diamond shaped wells look like they might pool water creating a lattice of cysterns. Recall that the shoe has no mesh panels at its sides. Creek crossings and wet commutes might be a bit more sloshy than previously. If you are wondering about night-time visibility, half of the vertical blue stripe running down either side of the vertical heel seam is reflective. Hope this helps. Toe box too tight by KevinNZ, 3 March 2018, 5 out of 5 people found this review helpful These shoes replaced my worn out Shinano XC70 shoes. Same wide size. The XC7s have much better sole. both stiffer and better grip/lugs. My problem is the depth of the toe box. My big toe does not fit nicely. The XC70s had a deeper toe box. there also uneven layers in the toe box I can feel. I ahve fitted a tinner insole but still have a problem. Pros: stiff goos sole Cons: tight toe box I found this review helpful I did not find this review helpful
