Good but… by ahoythere, 16 January 2015, 16 out of 20 people found this review helpful I’ve given this derailleur 4/5 stars due to a slight niggle (and admit that my niggle may be a little unjust). I ordered the ‘long cage’ version for my my 14 year old Gary Fisher Sugar 3 MTB which is fitted with 26″ wheels and 27 gears (9 speed cassette + 3 front chain rings). I chose the long cage version because I was worried that with the short cage version, I would not be able to select all gears and run the risk of getting chain slap. As you can see from the pics, when the derailleur is under tension, it’s quite close to the ground. In fact, I’ve never seen a derailleur on a MTB which is so close to the ground. Is this normal? I am slightly concerned that it will be more vulnerable to knocks and bumps and the hazards of off-roading. I’m wondering whether the short cage version is in fact a ‘medium’ cage which would have done the job and not have protruded so far? [Chain Reaction – maybe you or Shimano could provide more guidance in the product specs as to which cage to buy.] The other slight niggle I have is the angle of the gear cable attachment which means that you have to cut the wire quite short in order to prevent the cable snagging on the rear spokes. This has not proved to be a problem though. On the plus side, this derailleur is easy to fit, doesn’t weigh much and my gear shifting has never been so precise and trouble free. All of my gears are selectable and I’m not getting any chain slap. This may be in part due to the fact that I’ve shortened my chain. Pros: smooth efficient shifting good quality excellent service from chain reaction Cons: long cage version looks too long I found this review helpful I did not find this review helpful
Solid perfomer by MrBoynton, 8 December 2013, 8 out of 8 people found this review helpful Had these mechs on a Specialized FSR XC for about 5 years, had 2 now and only swapped because the jockey wheels were worn out and CRC had a good price on a whole mech. Done lots of Km in all conditions, quite sandy here so things can wear quickly. Shifting always good, occasional adjustments needed that’s all.
