Lighter and better shifting by RayTO, 30 September 2014, 10 out of 12 people found this review helpful This is my first XT component and I love it. I previously had LX shifters and derailleurs. I did not think it would make much difference, but it is amazingly better at shifting. And the XT components are so much lighter. I got this model because it has the Clutch switch and it basically does away with the need to have a chain guard because the rear der won’t slap around. I also went 1×10. Which shaved off 3lbs off my bike. And I noticed the weight reduction right away. I did get the Long Cage and the M771 11-36t cassette and XT 10spd shifter and HG95 Chain with a RaceFace 34t N-W on an Lx crank to run 1×10. I did not remove any links on this install but I did have to set the b-limit screw all the way down. Shifts were crisp up and down. Even with the Hope 40t T-Rex. I love it! Great concept, poor execution by disassembled, 2 December 2013, 6 out of 6 people found this review helpful Initially I loved this product, it does exactly what it’s supposed to and fixed all my chain slap issues on my Giant trance X, it also helped with some of the ghost shifting which this bike has always had when riding fast on rough ground. With the clutch engaged the shifting is slightly heaver than normal, but nothing that really bothers me. The bad side, my first one failed after about three months and maybe 1000km. The small U bracket arm which holds the tension adjuster broke with what i’m pretty sure is a metal fatigue failure. This was replaced under warranty (Thanks CRC for awesome service here). A few months on and the replacement unit has failed in exactly the same way. It looks to me like each time rotational stress is placed on the clutch (eg: suspension chain growth, gear change and chain slap) the clutch friction component (ring?) gets pushed harder into this U bracket, i’d guess there’s a little bit of movement in this part and it finally gets work hardened and fails from metal fatigue. The engineering solution for this should be simple enough really, I haven’t head of this problem with the XTR model. Pros: minimal chain clap nice shifting lopoks tough Cons: under engineered slight increase of shifting effort I found this review helpful I did not find this review helpful
