retro bike upgrade by NineBolts, 19 August 2013, 11 out of 11 people found this review helpful I used these to replace the Weinmann caliper brakes on a vintage road bike. If you’ve updated an old bike with new wheels then chances are you’ve had to adjust the brakes to near their full extent of drop and and if like me you’re trying to use old Weinmann 730 brakes then you’ll never be able to achieve the braking efficiency of a modern setup. To go with the upgrade of faster wheels I needed better braking, queue the search for modern brakes that have suitable drop. These are one of the few options available and the price is very reasonable. They also come in the nutted fitting rather than the recessed fitting, which means they fit in the same way as the old Weinmanns without the need for any modification to the frame. The swap was easy but like all modern brakes the cable entry is from the other side to that of vintage Weinmanns. That’s not really an issue and just means a bit of cable routing around the rear of a vintage bike. The brakes look the part, they have the form and function of modern calipers and similar dimensions to the originals on the bike, so you’ll keep the overall line, dimensions and clearance for the widest of mudguards. Stronger more rigid brakes means the lever pressure gets to the brake pads, at last I can stop my vintage singlespeed conversion as quickly as my modern roadie. The pads supplied could probably be better but they are in cartridges so could easily be swapped out if your preference is for more grippy pads. Pros: nutted fittings work well on vintage bikes one of few options for vintage 70s style frames modern features quick release and centering available in silver to match your chrome Cons: pads could be better I found this review helpful I did not find this review helpful
Good Long Reach Brake by Anonymous, 28 February 2013, 5 out of 5 people found this review helpful These work great if you have a bike that requires a longer reach brake or are converting a bike from 700C to 650B wheels. The calipers are designed not only for longer reach but to give better clearance on mud guard/fenders similar products by Shimano. I found this review helpful I did not find this review helpful
